Sell what is on the truck!

Several years ago, I had the pleasure of attending a sales conference for Kontron, a longtime WDL partner. Kontron is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of industrial and embedded computers. The conference was near Kontron’s global headquarters in Augsburg, Germany, and a particularly memorable session featured their director of operations. Numerous times during the conference, speakers highlighted Kontron’s popular MoST approach-- Modified STandard products. The DOO had a slightly different message: “SELL WHAT IS ON THE TRUCK!” Except louder, and decidedly more GERMAN. It makes sense: sell the stuff you have right now.

Selling custom or modified standard products is almost easy; just sell the customer whatever it is that they want! I say it’s almost easy, because more people would be salespeople if selling anything was actually easy. To “sell what is on the truck” can be more challenging. After close to two years of pandemic times, the calculus has changed. Designing and delivering samples can take months longer than normal. Several of our partners have started to quote lead times of a year or more. It is more important than ever to “sell what is on the truck.”

This week, our Products of the Day have featured what is on the truck, or more accurately, what is securely stocked in WDL’s climate controlled warehouse. With a long list of high mix, low volume manufacturers, it can be a challenge for a boutique-ish distributor like WDL Systems to stock all the things that our customers might want. Based on business intelligence, industry trends, and combined centuries (seriously, centuries!) of experience, we are able to make some pretty great guesses.

And so we bring you a week of products, from systems to board level solutions, that are in stock and ready to ship to you!
